Bathrooms

1850-1890

Up to the 1920s, multi-storey housing was built without toilets and bathrooms. Water and drainage installations were concentrated in the kitchen, where there was one riser for domestic cold water and one (externally located) drain from the kitchen sink.

Flushing toilets and (internal) soil pipes were not introduced until the end of the 1800s, while bathrooms proper only became commonplace in new-build homes around 1920.

Toilets/bathrooms (wet rooms) retrofitted into properties of this period are often built in or up against existing structures (see “Updated details”).
