Bays
1890-1920
Bays started to be used as decorative elements in buildings from the late 1800s. Regardless of the occurrence of seemingly load-bearing elements in the form of e.g. corbels, it is possible to assume that bays were suspended on cantilevered iron beams forming part of the joist framework in storey partitions – as with balconies.
Additional complex structures are required when bays deviate in design from the rectangular, as seen in the figure to the right.
