Transverse partitions
1920-1940
Towards the end of the 1800s, interior walls cease to be made of timber frames, partly due to legal requirements. Thereafter, interior walls/partitions are constructed of either brickwork or board partitions. Later still – with the arrival of bathrooms – walls are built using inorganic sheet material (e.g. slag concrete).
Transverse brick walls can be likened to large upright “slices” rising up the building, and are supported by beams in the storey partitions.
