Bathrooms

1850-1890

The bathroom did not become a permanent component of new-build multi-storey housing until around 1920. However, increasing demand for comfortable housing and opportunities for personal hygiene gradually led to the installation of interim bathing conditions in many homes built without baths.

Consequently, in the late 1960s a large number of toilets and bathrooms were installed in outdated homes – with increasingly improved and efficient solutions for ensuring that the building did not suffer damage due to increased moisture load.

The figure to the right shows the basic construction of a safe bathroom solution in an older property. In properties with internal timber-frame walls, additional requirements are set for the bathroom’s construction.
