Cornice ("save-a-stretcher")

If cracks occur in the cornice (e.g. as a result of subsidence), it may be necessary to rebuild sections of it. The “save-a-stretcher” cornice was developed using earlier brick sizes, and rebuilding with modern-day bricks may mean that joints need to be pinched. In less severe cases, the brickwork is reinforced with rustproof round bars inserted into raked joints, as shown in the figure to the right.
