Stairs and partitions

1920-1940



Buildings from the 1930s onwards start to replace the two wooden staircases with a single staircase made of concrete.

The vast majority of concrete staircases in this period are made of prefabricated steps, which are partly enclosed (fixed) into the walls but also rest on the step or landing below. The landings are situ cast.

Because of this enclosing system as well as the load from the steps, transverse stair walls are a minimum of one-brick thick.
